It is often referred to as the āstomach flu,ā but it is not actually related to the flu. It can be caused by a number of viruses and is also called āviral gastroenteritis.ā It is extremely contagious, so hand washing is key and so is trying to limit contact with the sick one as much as possible! Symptoms will usually subside on their own in 24-48 hours, but can sometimes be longer. While waiting for it to pass, we treat with supportive measures to hopefully speed up the process!
šš¼HYDRATION! hydration is key. Little kids can become dehydrated quickly with any sort of vomiting or diarrhea. Give little sips of water every 15 minutes, not big glasses of water. This will help avoid just throwing everything back up.
šš¼Activated charcoal: we try and give a spoonful in water and also give little sips every so often. You can mix in grape juice to hide the color/grittiness, but it doesnāt taste like anything on itās own!
šš¼DoTERRAs tamer oil or Digestzen diluted on the belly every couple of hours to help with tummy discomfort. Ginger oil diluted on belly can also help with nausea.
šš¼Continue/up regular vitamins like c, d, zinc. Zinc is thought to lessen severity/time of sickness.
šš¼Give pedialyte if needed to avoid dehydration! Itās not the cleanest, but it is better than becoming so dehydrated a hospital stay is required!
šš¼100% pure grape juice! Itās thought to help prevent those that havenāt gotten it yet from getting it. Some give it to the sick individual as well as those not sick. It wonāt hurt!
šš¼BRAT diet: bananas, rice, applesauce, toast. Nothing that will be heavy on the stomach. The main thing is hydration over food if food isnāt tolerated.
šš¼Lots of rest!
